When an extraction is the right call.
We preserve teeth when we can — but not every tooth can be saved. Extraction is the right answer when the tooth is fractured below the gumline, has severe decay past the point a crown can rescue, has lost too much bone support, or is a wisdom tooth causing crowding and infection risk.
Before we pull anything, we'll show you the X-ray, explain exactly why, and discuss replacement options including implants, bridges, or a partial denture. No "take it out and we'll figure out the rest later."
Simple vs. surgical extractions.
Simple extractions are for teeth that are fully visible above the gumline and structurally intact enough to be removed with forceps. Local anesthesia, 15-30 minutes, minimal post-op soreness. From $284.
Surgical extractions are needed for broken teeth, teeth with curved roots, and anything below the gumline. We make a small incision, sometimes remove a bit of bone, and section the tooth into smaller pieces for easier removal. Still under local anesthesia, 30-60 minutes. From $407.
The goal either way: remove the tooth cleanly with minimum trauma to surrounding bone, so the site heals well and a future implant or bridge has something solid to anchor to.
Wisdom teeth — when to remove them.
Not every set of wisdom teeth needs to come out. We evaluate the position (are they impacted?), the space in your jaw, whether they're fully erupted, and your oral hygiene. Clean, fully-erupted, functional wisdom teeth in a mouth with good hygiene can stay.
Removal is typically recommended when wisdom teeth are impacted (stuck at an angle), partially erupted (hard to clean and prone to infection), or causing crowding of other teeth. Most wisdom-tooth extractions at Missouri City Dentistry are done under IV sedation by Dr. Huynh — you arrive, briefly go to sleep, and wake up with them out. Bone grafts — the step that protects your future implant.
Whenever a tooth is removed in the front of the mouth or in a site where an implant is planned, we strongly recommend a socket-preservation bone graft at the same visit. A small amount of bone graft material is placed in the socket before the gum is closed, maintaining the width and height of the jaw.
Without it, the bone can resorb significantly in 3-6 months, making a future implant harder and more expensive. With it, you keep your options open. Adds about $450 to the extraction visit — often partially covered by insurance when clinically indicated.

Do you take my insurance for an extraction?
Insurance is the first thing nearly every caller asks about. We are in-network with many PPO dental plans and we file the claim for you, and most plans pay a share of an extraction as a major service. Call 281-747-9988 with your insurance card in hand — we verify your specific plan before the appointment and tell you your out-of-pocket in advance. If we are not in-network with your plan, we will say so on the phone rather than after the tooth is out.
What if I don't have insurance?
You can still be treated. Self-pay simple extractions start at $284 and surgical extractions start at $407, and you get a written estimate before we begin. Sedation and bone grafting are quoted separately so you can see what each part of the visit costs. Our membership plan takes 20% off treatment, and for larger treatment plans we offer financing through Cherry and CareCredit.
Can you take the tooth out the same day?
Often yes, and about one in five extraction calls we take is asking exactly that. Whether it happens at the first visit depends on what the X-ray shows. If there is active infection or swelling we usually start antibiotics and pain relief first and bring you back once it has settled, because taking a tooth out through an active infection is harder on you and less predictable. If the case calls for IV sedation, that visit is booked separately so you can arrange a driver. We will tell you which it is at the visit, not after.

Should I remove my wisdom teeth even if they don't hurt?
Not always. Fully erupted, straight, easy-to-clean wisdom teeth can stay. We recommend removal only when teeth are impacted, partially erupted (infection risk), crowding other teeth, or showing decay in hard-to-reach areas. We'll review your panoramic X-ray and tell you honestly — no unnecessary surgery.
How long does recovery take after a tooth extraction?
Most patients are back to normal within 2-3 days for a simple extraction and 5-7 days for a surgical or wisdom-tooth removal. Soft foods for 3-5 days, no straws or smoking for 72 hours (prevents dry socket), gentle rinses with salt water after 24 hours. Full bone healing takes 2-3 weeks.
What is a dry socket?
Dry socket happens when the protective blood clot in the extraction site dislodges too early, exposing the bone underneath. It's painful but treatable. Risk factors: smoking, drinking through a straw in the first 72 hours, vigorous rinsing. If you feel increasing pain 3-5 days after extraction, call us — we can place a medicated dressing that relieves it within hours.
Do you offer sedation for extractions?
Yes. Nitrous oxide is available for any extraction from $119. IV sedation — the closest thing to sleeping through it — starts at $750+. Dr. Huynh administers IV sedation under a Texas Level 3 sedation permit. Most wisdom-tooth removals are done under IV.
