Crowding is more than a cosmetic issue.

Crowding happens when there isn't enough room in the jaw for every tooth to sit where it should, so teeth overlap, twist, or drift out of line. It usually comes down to a few causes:

  • A jaw that's small relative to tooth size (often hereditary)
  • Baby teeth lost too early — or held on too long
  • Teeth that are oversized for the space available
  • Impacted wisdom teeth pushing against the teeth in front of them

Why it's worth correcting.

Overlapped teeth create tight corners your brush and floss can't reach well. Plaque builds up in those hiding spots, and over time that raises your risk of cavities and gum disease.

Crowding also changes how your bite forces are shared. When some teeth take more load than they were built for, the result is often wear, cracking, and jaw pain — problems that usually cost more to fix later than alignment does now.

Gaps have causes — and good fixes.

A gap between teeth (your dentist may call it a diastema) shows up when teeth are small relative to the jaw, when a tooth is missing, or when extra gum tissue sits between two teeth. The most common spot is right between the two upper front teeth.

The right fix depends on the gap. Spacing spread across the whole arch usually calls for aligners. A small gap between two teeth can often be closed with dental bonding in a single visit. And if you want a front-tooth gap closed as part of a bigger smile change, porcelain veneers can handle both jobs at once.

Clear aligners — the workhorse for both.

For most crowding and spacing cases, clear aligners are the treatment we reach for first. A series of custom-made trays moves your teeth gradually and precisely, and each tray is nearly invisible while you wear it.

You take the trays out to eat and brush, and most patients find them more comfortable than traditional braces. At your consultation, we'll tell you honestly whether aligners fit your case or whether another route makes more sense.

When severe crowding needs more room.

Sometimes the jaw simply doesn't have space for every tooth, no matter how they're arranged. In severe cases, strategically removing one or more teeth creates the room the rest need to line up — usually followed by aligner treatment to finish the job.

If impacted wisdom teeth are adding pressure at the back of your mouth, removing them may be part of the plan too. Either way, we'll walk you through exactly why any extraction is recommended before anything happens.

Teeth Crowding & Spacing Correction in Missouri City, TX — questions worth asking.

Do wisdom teeth cause crowding?

They can contribute. Emerging wisdom teeth put pressure on the teeth in front of them, which can push things out of line. That said, research suggests wisdom teeth are not the sole cause of crowding in most adults. If yours are impacted or causing problems, removing them may be recommended — we'll check them at your exam.

At what age should crowding or spacing be treated?

Treatment is most efficient during adolescence, while the jaw is still developing — but adults can achieve excellent results too. We treat crowding and spacing in patients of all ages, and your consultation will tell us exactly what your case needs.

What causes a gap between the front teeth?

The most common gap — between the two upper front teeth — happens when teeth are small relative to the jaw, when a tooth is missing, or when extra gum tissue sits between the teeth. Depending on the cause and size, we close gaps with clear aligners, single-visit dental bonding, or porcelain veneers.

Are clear aligners effective for crowding?

Yes — clear aligners are the most popular treatment we offer for both crowding and spacing. Custom trays move teeth gradually and precisely, they're nearly invisible, and you can take them out to eat. Most patients find them more comfortable than traditional braces.

How much does crowding or spacing correction cost in Missouri City?

It depends on what your case calls for — a single-visit bonding fix costs far less than a full aligner case. We review a written estimate with you before treatment begins, so there are no surprises. We accept most PPO insurance plans and offer Cherry and CareCredit financing to spread payments out.

Is fixing crowding worth it if it doesn't bother me?

Often, yes — and not just for looks. Overlapped teeth trap plaque in spots your brush can't reach, which raises the risk of cavities and gum disease. Uneven bite forces can also lead to wear, cracking, and jaw pain over time. An exam will tell us whether your crowding is likely to cause trouble or is fine to leave alone.
