When wisdom teeth need to come out.
Most people's wisdom teeth (the third molars) come in between ages 17 and 25. When the jaw has room for them, they can erupt straight and behave. When it doesn't, they get stuck — and stuck wisdom teeth rarely stay quiet. We recommend removal when we see:
- Impaction — a tooth trapped in the jaw, causing pain, swelling, and in some cases cyst formation
- Crowding — an erupting wisdom tooth pushing your other teeth out of line
- Pericoronitis — a partially erupted tooth leaves a flap of gum where bacteria collect, causing infections that keep coming back
- Decay or gum disease — wisdom teeth are hard to reach with a brush, so cavities and gum problems find them first
- Damage next door — pressure from an impacted tooth can wear into the healthy second molar beside it
What happens during the visit.
First, a consultation: we take a panoramic X-ray — plus a CBCT 3D scan when we need to see exactly how the roots sit — so there are no surprises before anyone touches a tooth. Then we talk comfort. Local anesthesia numbs the area fully, and you can add laughing gas or IV sedation; Dr. Huynh provides IV sedation under a Texas Level 3 permit, and many patients remember little of the procedure.
The removal itself is either simple (for a tooth that has fully erupted) or surgical (for an impacted one). Most extractions take 20-45 minutes, and you head home the same day with written aftercare instructions.
Recovery — the first few days matter most.
Most patients feel back to normal within 3-5 days. Some soreness and swelling in that window is expected — it fades. What you do in the first days makes the biggest difference:
- Bite on gauze for the first 30-45 minutes to control bleeding
- Ice packs on the cheek — 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off — to keep swelling down
- Soft foods only at first: yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, applesauce, scrambled eggs
- No straws, smoking, or spitting — any of these can dislodge the blood clot and cause dry socket
- After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water to keep the extraction sites clean
- Skip hard, crunchy, or chewy foods for 1-2 weeks

No. If your wisdom teeth are fully erupted, healthy, properly positioned, and easy to keep clean, they may never need to go. We watch how they develop at your regular checkups and recommend removal only when a tooth poses a real risk to your oral health — never as a default.
